Thumbs up Submania 2008

Hey,

wanted to pay my respects to the organizers, Verena -your english really isn't that bad, besser als mein Duetsch - and Matthies, and of course my opponents.

It was a good tournament, everybody I saw fought hard, and yet the atmopshere was really friendly and sporty. There were big differences in experience, but concidering the atmosphere I would say it was a good tournament for starters to get used to competitions and get a grip on their nerves .

To Matthias and Verena I would like to say, respect for the way it was organized. It started on time, rules were very clear and the location was well chosen, nice and clean, proceedings went smoothly. Very well organized, especially if it's your first time organizing a tournament. Is this Deutsche Grundigkeit??

A few points, though, I saw a few fights where one of the fighters was stalling and merely defending without the referee either standing them up or giving fouls for inactivity, making it a bit boring to watch. Once it even resulted in a win to the lesser fighter
Another issue I'ld like to adress is if the point of the tournament is to have fun and learn and gain experience from one another I believe it would be better to fight in a poule system in stead of a knockout-system, of course you would have to reduce fight time, which may for many be an argument against. But this poule system would allow competitors to fight more fights and other fighters -espescially beneficial for those competitors who lost twice in a row and were out.
In Ede they have poules of 5 to 8 people, where everybody fights everybody (rounds last 4 minutes), 1 point to winner by points, 2 points awarded for winning by submission, the two or three fighters with the most points in the poule proceed to the finals, single knock out system. To win you might have to fight as many as 8 fights, and even those who lose still get to fight at least everybody else in their poule.

For those who have oppertunity to check out the grappling competitions in Ede (1.5 hours west of Osnabrück) I can certainly recommend it. At least 3 grappling tournaments per year, this year the first is I think on the 1st of march, with many fighters from holland and belgium (great atmosphere)

I had a great time and certainly hope to come next time as well!!
