| Hallo zusammen, Sorry to write this in English, but I find it easier. Any questions that any of you have, feel free to write them in German - I will answer as best I can. Firstly, yes, I am the (in)famous VT fighter who was present at the FAC in FF this weekend. I was not there representing VT, in fact i gave "Wing Chun" as my style. Why, because I do not judge myself as being a representative of VT in any way. I have previously trained in boxing (20 years ago), TKD (stopped about 8/9 years ago), WC (stopped about two years ago). I have also recently started to train in Judo. I came to VT about two years ago because I was working once a week in Bielefeld, and stumbled upon MK.'s school. I live about 170km away from Bielefeld and for a period of about a year trained at MK's once a week. I no longer need to go to Bielefeld as often, and am pleased if I get to see MK once a month. This year I have seen MK twice. I still class myself as a student of MK's, but should not really be judged as the "model VT student". Any VT training which is done apart from my visits to MK is done in my garage with a few friends. I think that the posting from me which PhB posted in another thread says a lot about my feelings towards the FAC, but I will expand a little more here, as there seems to be some interest. Is there a video of my fight - yes - and I hope it is never seen, lol. I ask that anyone who sees the video - and I am sure it will not take someone long to up it somewhere - not to look at it as me being a VT fighter, but as me being someone who trains in the martial arts, and *ing**un is one form or another has been a large part of this, and wanted to see where I stand. I am 38. I decided that something I wanted to do before there was absolutly not chance of every doing it was take part in a free fight. Midlife crisis? - maybe. I found out about the FAC two weeks ago - one day before end of registration - and registered straight away. I have done what I wished, and found that I am not happy with the outcome. I know however what to expect and what I have to alter if I wish to be successfull in such a competition. I will alter my training and intend to compete again - even if it is only one more time. So - the fight. Watching the video, there is very little of *ing**un is any form to be seen. That will please some people. The majority of the fight was on the ground. The majority of this time there was very little constructive groundwork. We both "gassed" very quickly. I would class it as the worst fight of the FAC. So - judge as you will. I was not happy with my performance. I am happy that I took part I learnt a lot Ask away...... Matt Smith |

| Hi Matt, -edit- Apart from that, it would be very interesting for most of us to know, which kind of techniques/strategies you did see working well in the event we are discussing or any other mma competition you took part in. The same applies of course to concepts which you felt were not really working or couldn´t be applied the way you were taught. I´d appreciate any comments on that, disregarding the fierce discussions we do sometimes have here, but of which you are not part, - edit - Best regards, mmaiscool Geändert von mmaiscool (11-03-2008 um 09:28 Uhr). |

| Hallo mmaiscool, Firstly, I must once again apologise to everyone that I am writing all this in English, but I fear that I may be misunderstood if I write it in German. I do understand German, and will have no problem understanding your questions / comments if they are not written in English. I will get back to you on the techniques / strategies question later, when I have had chance to review the video again. I have watched it once, shortly after the event, but have not looked at it since. Without looking at the video, I don't really remember much in detail about the fight. I am sure the video will jog my memory. I haven't taken part in any mma fights before this one. I have been active in both boxing and TKD (and rugby, if you count that ). I have also done a fair amount of door work, and unfortunatly growing up in and around a british army enviroment does let to the odd scrape or two. All of this of course contributed to the way the fight went. I remember, for instance, that I landed a head kick. Not typical WC/VT/WT/whatever, but the opportunity was there and I did spend quite a few years training that sort of thing. So, what the hell?I will also try to break down any concepts which I couldn't manage to apply as taught. But once again, I must review the video to jog my memory. I knew going into the FAC that I wasn't ready, not just in a cardio sense. I did however want to know where I stand at this moment in time. I now know. If you are interested in how specific VT concepts did/did not work, I don't know if I can tell you this. Right now, without looking at the video, I am not sure if anything VT specific came out at all. Some will see this as proof that VT concepts don't stand up. Maybe they do, maybe they don't; but if I am the person who is used to judge this fact, then the world is a pretty sad place .I am sure that most will agree, that one reverts back to that which is ingrained in times of stress. That definatly happened in the fight. I would be interested to know, of the people here who have taken part in this sort of event, who performed as well as they wished on the first time out? I know from boxing / TKD days, that experience is a valuable thing. I would hope that my second time out will be better. I definatly now know where I need to focus my training. I know that my training has to be altered substationally if I wish to compete in this arena and be successfull. If you are interested in my views on this, then I will be glad to expand. A lot of writing, but no answers to your questions as yet. I will try to answer them tomorrow, if that is ok. Regards, Matt |

| Hi Matt, there is no need to excuse yourself constantly! You went there, you lost - so what? Don´t worry, real sportsmen don´t laugh! If you don´t mind, let us know a little about how you think your training needs to be adopted. Would that be for competition only or do you see a common flaw in some of the VT concepts known to you? Thanks for your time, mmaiscool PS: So, möchte jetzt noch jemand behaupten, ich provoziere nur? Es scheint, dass ich im Gegenteil der einzige bin, der echtes Interesse hat. |

| to answer your question, i don't think anyone, on first fight, did exactly the way he wanted to. especially if u get hurt or set under stress in the fight, u cannot do a lot of things, just what's deep inside your mind works, to me that's grappling. bust never mind, i don't think that in your second fight, u'll do just like u wanrt, but u'll do better than in th efirst one

| @Matt: I think you are a very nice guy, there's no need for excuses. The only thing that count is, that you had the balls to fight. That makes you a winner i guess. |
