The Ultimate Fighting Championship will return to Montreal on May 1 headlined by the rematch between UFC light heavyweight titleholder Lyoto Machida and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
Yahoo Sports first reported the Machida vs. Rua rematch and the May 1 date on Wednesday, and MMAWeekly.com has confirmed through UFC sources that the bout, location and date are official.
Machida and Rua first fought at UFC 104 on Oct. 24 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in Machida’s first title defense. He retained the belt and remained undefeated garnering a somewhat controversial unanimous decision win.
Following the event at the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White, who thought Rua won the fight, said Rua would be granted an immediate rematch. The rematch was temporarily put on hold while Machida had surgery to repair an injured hand.
The May 1 date will mark the UFC’s third trip to Montreal.
