Tragödie in Indonesien

Ryan dies, Nicholas conscious

By Jeff Pamungkas

Indonesian lightweight fighter Jack Ryan passed away Thursday morning at 2AM of local time. Ryan was directly brought to Dr. Margono Soekardjo Hospital after being TKO'd by fellow Indonesian Syamsul Hidayat in round seven of a scheduled eight round fight in Purwokerto, Indonesia on February 14. A team of doctors conducted brain surgery, but could not save his life. Ryan becomes the second warrior to perish this year after sustaining injuries in an Indonesian boxing ring. Antonius J. Mosse died last January in Jakarta.

Nicholas, who also fell into coma the same night after suffering a boxing-related brain injury 2,000 miles away in Padang, Indonesia, has regained consciousness. "Nicholas has regained consciousness, but he's still under the effect of anesthetic. Let's pray for him," stated promoter Ilham Tanjung to Fightnews.com. Nicholas was floored in the final round of the scheduled eight round non-title strawweight bout.

Concerning the high frequency of brain injuries and ring fatalities in Indonesia, the medical experts of this country suspect that at least 75% of Indonesian boxers have a very high content of APOE4 (Apolipoprotein E-4) – a kind of protein in the brain appears to impair recovery from traumatic brain injury. So far, APOE4 is associated with an increased risk for of Alzheimer disease – but a recent ring medical finding shows that APOE4 is suspected as the probable cause of ring fatalities and brain injuries. According to the experts, fighters with APOE 4 must be forced into retirement.

Apart from that, it seems stiffer regulations for trainer certification, training methods, gym management, medical treatment and the management of Indonesian Boxing Commission must be put into effect. For example, in Indonesia a person doesn't need a certificate to be a boxing trainer. This situation produces fighters who tend to keep punching and punching as hard as possible, neglecting their defense. Many boxers lack the understanding of basic principles of boxing. That is perhaps the answer of why there is so high frequency of ring fatalities in this country.
