GLORY SPORTS INTERNATIONAL (GSI), the owner and rights holder of the GLORY World Series championship kickboxing promotion and other related businesses, has agreed to terms with Dutch-based competitor, ‘It’s Showtime,’ led by the renowned European fight manager and kickboxing promoter Simon Rutz. The landmark deal will effectively place all of the world’s top kickboxers, or stand-up fighters, under the same promotional umbrella. GSI will absorb other assets from and take over management of ‘It’s Showtime.’

“This is what the world of stand-up fighting has been waiting for – all the top fighters competing in the same series each time to find out who is really the very best,” said Marcus Luer, Managing Director of GSI. “GLORY World Series will be the ultimate platform and testing ground for these fighters to showcase their talent and skills. It doesn’t get much more exciting than this! “By adding ‘It’s Showtime,”’ continued Luer, “GLORY has truly established itself as the No. 1 kickboxing league in the world. This is what the fans have been waiting for and we are here to deliver it. GLORY will soon announce a new series of events and a modernized tournament format for the rest of the year and for 2013.

Looking at It's Showtimes Legacy in the kickboxing world:

Today the big announcement from Glory Sports International was the purchase of top competitor It’s Showtime, merging the talent from It’s Showtime in with the talent from Glory. For the first time since K-1 under FEG stopped running shows, the Kickboxing world is united again. It’s Showtime had a working agreement with K-1 Global which was at least active for the K-1 Rising in Madrid show, which was actually ran entirely by It’s Showtime staff, but it appears that the relationship was not as strong as everyone suspected.

That was, apparently, when the talks with Glory began. It’s Showtime’s history dates back to 1998 when the company was founded by Simon Rutz, with their first official show taking place in 1999. Over the years, It’s Showtime grew in popularity and even forged a partnership with K-1 for their European shows, putting on a few co-branded events at the Amsterdam ArenA in some of their biggest shows.

There might be a lot of revisionist history in the future, but It’s Showtime leaves behind a truly interesting legacy, including some truly memorable Kickboxing shows and Simon Rutz building an empire of European talent which was only rivaled by Bas Boon’s Golden Glory. It’s Showtime did things that K-1 did not dare to do, and when it did them, it did them extremely well. This includes the addition of numerous weight classes as well as additional ringside judges. It might sound trivial, but K-1 only dabbled in weight classes outside of Super Heavyweight/Heavyweight and Middleweight, never truly made a commitment to it, and fighters like Tyrone Spong might never of gotten to this level if it weren’t for It’s Showtime having multiple weight classes to highlight a wide array of talent.

On the judging front, it was a very simple concept, yet one that you very rarely see implemented outside of in It’s Showtime. In MMA fans will be upset, it seems almost weekly now, over poor judging in fights that go the distance. Rutz and Co. saw this and added more judges to ensure that even if a judge or two completely misjudged the fight, the proper fighter would not be robbed of a victory. On top of that, their matchmaking was always making the best of what they had available to them, which meant that not every card was stacked top-to-bottom, but they always featured recognizable names and always gave younger fighters a stage to prove themselves in.

It was these ideas and more that made It’s Showtime a runaway success and helped propel them to the top of the kickboxing world. It is not clear what will happen to the It’s Showtime brand, but it seems like an incredibly valuable asset and still holds a lot of clout in the kickboxing world. As of this moment there are still two It’s Showtime events on the schedule, one in July in Spain and one in September in Japan. These shows could easily be re-branded into Glory cards, but they could also simply be It’s Showtime events.

The winners tend to write the history books, and I say that we do the best that we can to remember what It’s Showtime meant for Kickboxing and remember It’s Showtime’s legacy for what it was. It’s Showtime proved that you didn’t need the K-1 name to be successful in the kickboxing game and even showed how to work with local promoters to put on events while putting on the best cards possible for fans and the fighters.

I feel like there is so much going on in the Kickboxing world right now that it is difficult to really pinpoint exactly where to start. I feel like watching the above video by FightstarTV is a good start if any, as Bas Boon discusses some of the implications of the purchase of It's Showtime. Firstly, there is talk about the future of Simon Rutz within the organization and how he will continue to play a big role, which to many will be a relief. Then, there is talk about possibly keeping the It's Showtime name alive much like the Strikeforce name is still alive even though the UFC owns it.

Danyo haben wir abgelehnt für die Final 16 - lieber 1 Jahr später und dann richtig, als vorher platt machen zu lassen. Da fehlt einfach Gewicht und dementsprechend Power. Jetzt war er auf 98 und ist runter auf 94,7 Kg oder so. Der Weg stimmt und er braucht ein bischen Zeit. Alles andere wäre zu früh. Er geht auf natürlich Weise mit dem Gewicht hoch und das dauert. Aber ist besser so.... Es ist nicht immer leicht verschiedene Zielsetzungen zu verfolgen. Promoter und Fans wollen Entertainment und das es richtig knallt. Wir wollen eine Karriere aufbauen und festigen. Da muss man eine gewisse Balance finden.
Danyo' s Fight gegen Filip Verlinden am Samstag hat bewiesen, dass es geht....da hat es richtig geknallt und die Halle war in Runde 5 aus dem Haeuschen...

Aber trotzdem kommt wohl ein etwas schwerer Junge als Gegner nach dem Turnier in Merseburg - als Probe sozusagen....:)

Ja, obwohl es nicht so einfach ist wenn man uns auf die Final 16 drängt und Danyo unbedingt dort haben möchte, aber man muss uns auch verstehen. Ich würde ihn auch lieber heute als morgen dort sehen, aber er hat noch nicht die körperliche Substanz.

Manhoef, Saki, Spong etc. sind nicht das Problem, das sehen wir eher bei Ghita, Schilt, Zimmerman und Friends....:)

Bei Ghita kannst du locker das teilweise weglassen....;)

Das sind Fighter wo Danyo noch mitmischen könnte, aber Ghita und Schilt ist zu heftig. Mit dem richtigen Gameplan und Umsetzung geht viel, aber auch die Power muss stimmen.... Bei Glory warten schon die richtigen Aufgaben, aber Step by Step. Der erste Gegner bei Glory, wenn es dabei bleibt, ist schon eine harte Nuss. Wird bestimmt in Kürze bekannt gegeben...

Ja Ghita ist aber auch nur TEILWEISE eine KO Maschine. Ansonsten ist er ein Nerd der nichts gebacken kriegt. Der ist das letzte Jahr auch wirklich schlecht unterwegs.

Genau, aber bevor er gegen solche Knaller wie Falin oder Manhoef ran darf, soll der erstmal diesen komischen Wendell Roche platt machen. Der ist ja noch etwas unbedeutender als Falin, der den gleichen Status wie Manhoef genießt, der ja auch ein richtiges Schwergewicht ist.

Today we are delighted to confirm that our acquisition of It’s Showtime is complete. We are looking forward to working with Simon Rutz, Remon Daaldler and their team in Holland and welcoming the athletes they represent to the GLORY platform. It’s Showtime will continue to stage events, beginning with the upcoming events in Tenerife, Spain on 21 July 2012, and in Sao Paulo, Brazil on 10 November 2012.

We are all unified in our purpose of bringing fans around the world the best possible matchups between the best fighters on the planet in order to deliver an incredible fan experience and bring the sport of Stand Up martial arts fighting to the level of global prominence it deserves.

We also want to take the opportunity to clarify a number of serious factual mis-statements contained in the press release distributed on 3 July 2012 by Mr. Gunil (Mike) Kim, the President of K-1. Our acquisition of the It’s Showtime business was conducted with the highest standards of professionalism, diligence, and integrity.

In respect of Mr Kim's statements:

1) we confirm that the It’s Showtime partner in Madrid still has not been paid for its production and promotion of the K-1 event in that market on 27 May.

2) the It’s Showtime organization had provided all required payment information for the fighters who competed at the event to K-1 Global Holdings on time so that K-1 Global Holdings could remit payment to the fighters as per their contract. The payments were received after the requisite requirement date for payment had expired and only after the televised announcement of our deal with It’s Showtime.

3) Mr. Simon Rutz's contract for services with K-1 never prevented him from selling his business or conducting any work for other promotions

4) K-1 still has not paid the fees it owes to Mr. Rutz under the contract. As a result, this contract is now terminated.

5) The management company representing all It’s Showtime fighters is now owned by GLORY

We congratulate Simon Rutz and his team on the business they have built, and look forward to working together. We will be announcing additional GLORY events for 2012 very soon. To all the fighters, trainers, promoters, and especially the fans around the world, we say to you, IT'S TIME FOR GLORY!
