How Important is your guard Game to You?

Are you uncomfortable being on
your back? Do you hate having someone
in your guard? Do you find yourself often
wrestling on your knees when you should
have someone in your guard? If you
"hate" the guard position, then you need
to work on both your attitude and your
guard game, because a strong guard
game is an essential part of being a
good bjj player. If you cannot be active
and effective from your guard, you are not
a complete jiu jitsu player.
Let's think this through: there isn't much
active guard playing in Judo. Sometimes
there is, but in competition the judges will
probably stand you up within ten seconds.
(they are changing a bit now)
Also, there isn't much guard work in
wrestling or sport Sambo. But in jiu-jitsu
it is part of the basic moves you need to
know well so you can teach it to others.
The best players have developed many
different guards. So, what happens when
you find yourself on your back? If you know
Brazilian jiu-Jitsu, then you are really just
at the beginning of things. Jiu-Jitsu was
originally developed for self defense, and the
guard position is an excellent defensive
position that you can also use to attack and
defeat opponents larger than you.
I suggest you start off learning to have a
good closed guard.

Now Go train!:)
