MMAWeekly had a story yesterday talking about the uncertainty of BJ Penn. After the article ran, the UFC had the difinitive answer yesterday afternoon. Many of you saw the breaking news on the Soundoff Forum but for those who may have missed it, here's the official press release from the UFC.
BJ PENN STRIPPED OF WELTERWEIGHT TITLE
May 17, 2004…. Zuffa, LLC, owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championshipâ, announced that due to BJ Penn’s reported signing with the K-1 organization, Penn would no longer compete in UFC events. Additionally, Penn’s actions have resulted in him being stripped of his title.
"I am looking forward to moving on and crowning a champion," stated UFC president, Dana White. An announcement will be made soon regarding who will compete for the welterweight championship. "
BJ Penn was unavailable for comment but he will release a statement to MMAWeekly very soon. A few people in Hawaii told MMAWeekly last week that the game plan for BJ was to drop the 170 pound title and go back to 155. Now the decision has been made and it doesn't look like BJ will be fighting for Zuffa anytime soon. It's believed that Pride or K-1 will bid for the services of Penn very soon.
