JKD Is Terrible!
Recently, I was showing a friend visiting from Thailand all about
Search Engines on the Internet.
He asked how I ranked for the term "JKD" (Jeet Kune Do).
I told him that I had no interest in receiving a high rank for that term.
Of course, he wanted to know if this was because the audience
was too small.
Well, it 'is' a small audience in the world of martial arts, but that's
not the reason.
Even though I am officially certified to teach JKD, I am not really
interested in linking to that name.
It was Bruce Lee's art -- it described 'him' martially.
Since his death, the term has come to encompass too broad of
a definition. And in my opinion. most don't understand what they
are promulgating.
For example, grab 75% (or more) of the JKD schools out there,
and Bruce Lee would be appalled, if he could see their practices:
* Most don't interrupt timing
* Most block/check 'before' they hit
* Most move the body 'before' the strike
* Most think that JKD encompasses 'all' martial arts
* Most include favorite techniques in their repertoires that
violate one or more of the JKD guidelines
It would be nice to say that JKD has many definitions -- it contains
all martial arts, and nothing is vetoed -- but that wasn't what the
founder intended. He didn't want to be limited by a stylized set
of techniques, but that didn't mean that all techniques would
survive the 'JKD filter.'
The inefficient needs to be eliminated. Bruce Lee's guidelines
should be studied more carefully. And a lot of retraining needs
to happen, before one can label their art JKD.
I remind everyone once again -- isn't it curious that those who
"best" learned Bruce Lee's art directly from Bruce Lee don't refer
to what they do as JKD. Those who 'do' build their own reputation
by using the label are the ones who just don't quite get it.
You can call what you do anything you want, (unless Bruce Lee's
daughter tries to sue you), but that doesn't mean that others will
agree with your nomenclature.
Calling a Block-First Style "JKD" doesn't suddenly make it so. You
can call it what you like, but ...
And now that I have thoroughly angered a few of you, let's
move on.
