Ich habe gerade von Marc Denny gehört, dass Sonny Umpad Lungenkrebs hat und im Sterben liegt.
An eine Genesung ist anscheinend nicht mehr zu denken.
Trotzdem alles Gute.

Dem kann ich mich völlig anschliessen.
Lungenkrebs ist echt ne sch... Geschichte!!
Und so alt ist er ja auch noch nicht - :(
Aber die Hoffung stirbt zuletzt - also auch von meiner Seite alles Gute!!!

Auch von mir alles Gute! Leider weiß ich, dass diese Diagnose wenig Hoffnung auf Heilung mit sich bringt.
Ein großartiger Lehrer, von dem ich viel Inspiration erhalten habe.

Ist natürlich eine traurige Sache, aber wem wunderts ?
Hat er doch auf dem 2. FMA Festival mehr gequalmt wie ein alter Trabi.

The FMA world lost one of its great ones with the passing of maestro Sonny Umpad this past Thursday, just two months after his 58th birthday. Though he was a private person, preferring to work on his art at home rather than in the limelight, Sonny attracted the attention of some of the leading lights in the martial arts community such as Wally Jay and Jesse Glover. A native of Cebu, he trained with people like Cacoy Canete and Raymond Tobosa in his youth.
Sonny's great contribution to the art was his amazing creativity. He studied and analyzed everything that crossed his path, always figuring out ways to improve and integrate new ideas into his art. A master of double sticks, his centerline roll and understanding of leverage revolutionized sinawalli for those who experienced his technique, and his interpretation of sikaran raised the combative efficacy of kicking in weapons-based arts. In later years Sonny focused on edged weapons, teaching both long and short blades with the respect of one who understands the reality of such.
Besides his gifted movement, Sonny was also a prolific master craftsman. He could make a weapon out of anything, and each piece he designed was a unique and individual work of art, above and beyond mere utilitarian function. He was a true renaissance man in the art who created a unique legacy for his students and friends. He will be sorely missed.

SONNY UMPAD REMEMBERED
When I received word that Escrimador Master Sonny Umpad was suffering from terminal cancer and then last week, received word that he had passed, it was a sad moment for me.
Although I met Sonny once in the early 90’s briefly during The California State Karate Championships in Oakland, California, and again in the late 90’s at the Bruce Lee Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Convention in Seattle, Washington, I still felt that I had lost a friend. I was privileged to spend the weekend with Sonny in Seattle that weekend. We met for breakfast and spend the entire morning discussing Escrima and the Filipino Martial Arts. It was in Seattle, he gave me a pair of rubber covered training sticks. It was meant to be used in practicing Escrima, but I choose to use it for developing punching and blocking skills. Because of the sticks, I can free spar with students without taking risk of serious injuries. It was a simple but very brilliant idea. So simple I asked myself, “Why didn’t I think of that?” The stick is a substitute for focus pad drills. The Umpad training sticks enable my students to develop form, flow, accuracy and subtle strength. As recent as yesterday, I used the sticks for the one and half hour of training with private students, I paused to remember Sonny as I look and held the sticks in my hands. The martial arts journey is never a solo act. As the journey continues; you will encounter many great artists like Sonny. Sonny will always have a special place in my heart. Like those before him, Angel Cabales, Remy Presas, Bruce Lee, Low Bun, Howard Jackson and many others; their spirits will be felt and as I remember them, they will not be far away. Sonny may you rest in Peace and may your Legacy remain alive through those who had the privilege to share your knowledge. - Leo Fong

Ich möchte mich hiermit bei allen bedanken die direkt oder indirekt ihr Beileid bezeugt haben.Sonny war für mich und Pierre nicht nur Lehrer sondern auch ein guter Freund.Mit ihm ging ein großes Wissen über die FMA Arts , wir die Visayan Corto Kadena Familie werden unser bestes geben das sein Stil nicht vergessen wird.
