Russian martial arts TV channel banned in Moldova
Excerpt from report by Moldovan news agency Basapress
Chisinau, 22 February: The Audio Visual Council [a media regulator,
CCA] has banned the rebroadcasting of the Russian Boyets [Fighter] TV
channel in Moldova, saying that it shows too many scenes of violence.
A representative of the council's monitoring service said that the
round-the-clock monitoring of this TV channel has shown that it is
violating Articles 6.2 and 6.3 of the radio and TV broadcasting code, as
well as Article 7 of the European Convention on Transborder Television.
"The broadcasting of fighting chamspionships which do not have any rules
and which show scenes of excessive violence in prime time is prohibited
because it is insulting to human dignity and psychological development
of minors," the representatives of the council said.
[Passage omitted: more about this.]
Iolanta Mura, the representative of the Sun Communications company
which is one of the rebroadcasters of this TV channel, said that Boyets
is a TV channel specializing in martial arts, a fact which is not
banned. "We will abide by the CCA decision, although legislation does
not stipulate what the difference is between violence and excessive
violence and it is not clear what will be done in the case of fantasy
films which contain much more serious scenes," Mura said.
[Passage omitted: The CCA issues licence to a local radio station.]
