hi,

AFFLICTION TO USE UNIFIED RULES AT BANNED
Wednesday, July 09, 2008 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com
headline.jpg

With July 19 just around the corner, some questions still exist about Affliction’s upcoming debut show, especially involving the rules that will govern the upcoming fights in California. Affliction vice president Tom Atencio verified during a media conference call on Wednesday that the promotion will institute the standard unified rules for its show.

“Unified rules, so I’m pretty much going to adopt UFC rules,” Atencio stated when asked what rules would govern the debut event.

This ruling of course will allow the fighters to use elbows on the ground, which has been the most glaring difference between many of the U.S. fight promotions. While organizations such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship and EliteXC have always allowed elbows under the unified rules, other promotions such as the International Fight League and Strikeforce have taken away elbows as a legal maneuver.

Atencio addressed the idea of Affliction adding more title fights to future cards. The upcoming bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Tim Sylvia will be for the WAMMA heavyweight championship.

“We have the WAMMA belt on this one, so if everything works out then absolutely,” Atencio he said about the addition of more title belts. “That’s going to be a bit of a struggle just because like I said before, no matter what you do you’re going to be criticized from one person or another.”

“We’ve been criticized for doing the WAMMA belt, but we also have people that accept it and embrace it. If we can bring a lot of different organizations together it makes a lot of sense, but that’s just it… if we can bring organizations together then it will be fine and we’ll have one undisputed champion.”

WAMMA has been trying to get a foot hold in the mixed martial arts world since unifying debuting in late 2007, billing itself as the “first ever MMA sanctioning body.” This will be the first time a WAMMA champion will be crowned.

For now, Atencio says Affliction is happy with their current situation, but he didn’t totally rule out the promotion doing an actual “Affliction” title in their promotion at some point down the road.

“You never know what’s going to happen in the future, but we’re working with WAMMA right now, and if the relationship continues the way it is then absolutely,” he said.

Numerous bouts on the Affliction card will take place in multiple weight classes, so it’s likely only a matter of time before the promotion considers adding a new champion to their its roster.

If you’re a start-up – and make no bones about it, when it comes to mixed martial arts promotion, Affliction (the successful clothing company) is a start-up – aligning yourself with a multi-billionaire who authored “The Way to the Top” can’t be a bad maneuver. At least that’s the thinking of the brass at Affliction in partnering with business mogul Donald Trump.

Aside from his success in real estate development and television, Trump has had his hand in the fight game for a long time, primarily in boxing.

“Mike Tyson fought for me more than any other promoter,” commented the real estate magnate. “To this day, we still do quite a few boxing matches and we actually do many of the MMA fights down at my hotel in Atlantic City (N.J.) called the Taj Mahal.”

Jumping in as a partner on the promotional side of MMA comes to Trump two-fold. Obviously he sees a business opportunity with a group that he feels has a strong chance at success, but he also says he’s a fan, something supported not only by his comments during a media conference call on Thursday, but also by his ringside presence at UFC 84 in May.

“I have so many fights that I have at different venues around the country and we’ve done so much of this… I also happen to enjoy it. I watch it. I like the MMA stuff,” commented Trump. “It’s the new wave. I don’t know that it takes over for boxing, but a lot of people are watching.

“My partners are fantastic. We have a very well capitalized company, very strong. We’ve sold out the arena very quickly and a lot of people were surprised at how quickly, but it sold out. It’s something that I do.”

When he was first introduced as a partner to Affliction Entertainment, Trump was candid about his name on the project lending credibility to it, something he doesn’t shy away from now. Although he didn’t go into detail, he did mention that his involvement has been more extensive than he first anticipated.

“I think I do add a certain credibility. I’m a very strong partner and I’m a good partner. I’ve certainly done a little bit more than I thought I would have done, but that’s to the good of the company,” he said, adding that he has a tremendous amount of respect for the efforts of his partners.

“I am absolutely impressed with Tom (Atencio, vice president of Affliction). I am absolutely impressed with the people that (Affliction has) hired to do the show. They really have got a great group of people.”

Trump is absolutely upbeat as the days wind down to the first Affliction show. You would expect nothing less from a promoter. While he believes that he and his partners will be successful, he realistic about the future of not only this, but any new company.

“Business is business and sometimes things work great and sometimes they don’t work great,” Trump said with candor. “This is one that I think is a natural… I really think it is going to be really successful.

“And I think that our first fight is a really good indication of that. Because, with a real start-up, and this is a start-up… that we sold out a major arena in L.A. is really an amazing thing. So I think it’s going to be very successful. I’ll let you know about it in a couple of years… maybe you’ll let me know about it.”

- HOMINICK TO STAND AND PROVE AT AFFLICTION
Saturday, July 12, 2008 - by Mick Hammond - MMAWeekly.com
Mark Hominick_Pose.jpg

This Saturday at the Affliction show in Anaheim, Calif., Canadian 145-pound fighter Mark Hominick has an opportunity to start over again.

After having an up and down time in the Ultimate Fighting Championship at lightweight, Hominick was supposed to make a big splash moving down to his natural weight of 145 pounds in World Extreme Cagefighting, but again was met with mixed results.

Eager to prove himself as one of the best in the featherweight division, he has been given such an opportunity in Affliction against the currently rebounding Trenell “Savant” Young.

“I’m just pumped to be a part of history,” stated Hominick of his participation in Affliction. “I was lucky to be on this card. I’m thrilled and plan on stealing the show.

“They put the fighters first, that’s what they’re concerned about, and they’ve also got the fans in mind as well. I think the fans can really appreciate how great of a card this is. Top to bottom, it’s just stacked.”

Recently, Hominick’s opponent, Savant Young scored a major upset when he defeated Shooto superstar “Lion” Takeshi Inoue. In facing off against Young, Hominick feels he could put himself back in the running for a title, should Affliction decide to crown a champion at 145-pounds.

“Well, with Savant, I’m fighting a top ten fighter, who previously beat the No. 2 ranked guy in the division, so beating him puts my name back where it belongs, in my opinion,” he said. “Coming out of the show as the winner, I think it puts me in contention right away.”

However, Hominick knows that is easier said than done.

“I think it’s an exciting match-up,” he commented. “He’s going to stand and bang with me, and he brings it and is 100 percent with whatever he does, but on paper, I think it’s going to go my way, and in the ring as well.

“He’s short and stocky, and he definitely wants to be on the inside, and I on the outside. He throws caution to the wind with his punching, and that’s the type of fighter I like. I like catching guys when they make mistakes, and make them pay for it.”

Currently Hominick is signed to three-fight deals with both Affliction and TKO in Canada, where he has only one aspiration, to regain his lost title.

“I really don’t want to fight anyone unless it’s for a title,” he said about TKO. “I lost to (Hatsu) Hioki twice, with the last one happening in controversial decision, so I don’t think there’s anyone really left in that division right now.

“I just want to fight for the title, and I think that’s what they’re saying too. If he has to fight someone first and then I have to fight the winner, whoever, I’m just looking to be the champion there.”

Regardless of individual promotional desires, Hominick’s overall goal remains the same.

“You’re only as good as your last win, and I have to prove where I am in this division,” he stated. “Talk is cheap. I consider myself to be one of the best in the division, I just have to step up and prove it.

“I just have to prove it in this next fight with Savant, show that I belong in the Top 10. I won’t be calling out anyone above that, because I’ve got to prove myself and show them where I belong.”

With aspirations to be recognized as one of the best 145-pound fighters in the world, and with ample opportunities in multiple promotions before the end of the year, this could be the time for Mark Hominick to put his stamp on the division once and for all.

“I’d like to thank NCFC Fight Management and MMATraining.com,” he closed out. “I’ve been doing a daily blog for my training for this camp, and they’ve been monitoring both workouts, day and night, for this past month.

“To the fans, come and be a part of history. It’s going to be a great show with a stacked card. The card is based around heavyweights, but there’s a couple of 145’ers that are planning on stealing the show.”

When you think of legends in mixed martial arts, names like Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Randy Couture, Wanderlei Silva, Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz are commonplace. However, it’s hard to make a list like that without including the name Vitor Belfort.

Belfort made his debut at UFC 12 where he defeated Tra Telligman and Scott Ferrozzo. He was only 20 years old at the time. He had extremely fast and accurate hands and soon became one of the most feared strikers in the Octagon. His 44-second win over Wanderlei Silva remains as one of the most exciting knockouts in the history of MMA.

“The Phenom” quickly became one of the most popular figures in the sport. However, his career has weathered some ups and downs. He briefly held the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight belt before losing it in his very next fight to Randy Couture. He lost a razor-thin split decision to Tito Ortiz in his last Octagon appearance back at UFC 51. Since then, he’s had mixed results in Pride and Cage Rage.

The past has been written for Belfort, but he is looking to author a new future for himself at a new weight class. He will be dropping to middleweight in his next fight this Saturday on Affliction’s debut show.

Belfort spoke with MMAWeekly Radio recently to discuss his upcoming fight. “I'm really excited,” he exclaimed. “It's a great event. We look forward to it becoming big. The sport's already huge. We just need the right people around the sport; the right promoters taking care of fighters. Everything is right there; it's just waiting for us.”

One of the biggest changes Belfort has made is his transition to Xtreme Couture, which is quickly earning a reputation as the premiere MMA training facility today. The training has yielded positive results for the Brazilian.

“I think the mentality of Xtreme Couture is wonderful. It's a great facility, a great group of sparring partners, good trainers. I really enjoy it. Everybody is equal over here. Coach Tompkins is wonderful. I'm having a great time with him and other coaches over here too. I think it's the perfect environment for a fighter. It's been a pleasure. I've developed my skills and I'm ready to go. I'm really enjoying it and being ready for my next fight.”

A believer in fight unity, Belfort feels that the fighters are what drive the sport and that they need to stick together outside of the cage.

“We need people who stick together,” he stated. “We can fight against each other, but we're friends. We're all on the same page. We're fighting for the same reason. We're trying to put food on the table at home. There is going to be some time when we get together like a union.

“Everybody can watch from each other. We get our respect from the promoters. We get our respect from the fans. When we get that, we'll get more power. Not just to get better pay, but also we are going to have more respect from the fans when they see that we are a union. We are there to fight. We respect each other. We'll help each other. We'll be like a family.”

While some stars in sports such as baseball and football have alienated the fans and forgotten who pays their salary, Belfort recognizes how important the fans are to MMA.

“The fans are the ones supporting this thing. All the sports in the world including soccer, American football; without the fans they are nothing. That's why I'm always thinking of them. They are always on my mind. One of the reasons I'm still doing this is for them. I'm really excited to fight in America for my fans.”

With an excellent training camp at Xtreme Couture, Belfort feels he is in great shape and ready to resurrect his career to what it was.

“I'm ready to go right now,” he said excitedly. “If the fight was to go tomorrow, I'm ready. It's so good to be here and have everyone correct me. Everybody is helping each other. We help so many fighters here. It's like a family. I'm safe. I'm happy. People can look in my eyes and see how ready I am; my body, my mind, my soul, my spirit. I just have to take my time and listen to the trainers. I'm here to accomplish my job.”

Some fans have wondered what Belfort’s aspirations are at middleweight. Will they witness the return of the “Old Vitor”?

“My goal is Terry Martin. But if you asked me what my goal is to be at the top of this weight division, to fight the best and be the best. That's everybody's goal – to be in the spotlight. I want to accomplish so many things. One of the things I want is to be the champion and fighting the best. Right now I'm working for Affliction. Whatever is in front of me, I just have to take it. The promoters decide. I have my agent. I'll be ready to go.”

Terry Martin is a dangerous competitor who has very good wrestling and power in both of his hands. Belfort realizes the strengths of his Chicagoan opponent, but he feels confidently that he will be ready for wherever the fight may go.

“Terry's a tough guy. He's very strong. He has heavy hands. I'm facing a lion, man. Two lions are going to face each other on the 19th, so I'm ready to go. I'm ready to knock him out. I'm ready to finish him on the ground. I'm ready to take him down. I'm ready for anything!”
