WVR representative Mukai revealed at today’s press conference that Asashoryu created Team Asashoryu for the sake of Mongolian MMA fighters and that his intention is to send them out to take on the world. Mukai travelled to Mongolia and met Asashoryu in person. He said that martial arts is hot in Mongolia right now. It seems like these past 2 years MMA has also begun to become popular there and Mukai says that he felt that himself when he was there.
He said that Asashoryu is currently in business in Mongolia after retiring from Sumo Wrestling and he is also the honorary president of the Mongolian Wrestling Association. Coaching at Team Asashoryu is done by Sumiyabazar Dolgorsuren and Serjbudee “Blue Wolf” Dolgorsuren, who both have MMA experience and they currently rent Wrestling and Boxing gyms to train at. Mukai doesn’t think the fighters there should face top fighters immediately but he thinks they will be a threat from now on.
When reporters asked Mukai if he offered a fight to Asashoryu himself Mukai said “I didn’t” with a laugh. He doesn’t think Asashoryu will convert to an MMA fighter, he thinks Asashoryu will concentrate on management and business.
I doubt Mukai traveled to Mongolia just for Jadamba though so I wouldn’t be surprised to see more fighters from there in SRC in the future. Mongolia and Team Asashoryu might be SRC’s route into the future Kakutougi war-zone that is Asia.
Akihiro Gono who was present at today’s press conference said that he’s looking forward to fighting in a class which suits his skeleton. He had to put on muscle in the past to be able to fight at weights as high as 90kg. He has left Grabaka and is currently training at various places, he has travelled to train in America twice this year. He spends most of his time at Joji Nogi’s place though. Nogi is a former pro Boxer and is now a trainer.
Gono is currently weighing 77kg and said that his weight hasn’t been at 70kg since he was 16 years old. His ability at running 50 meters, long jumps, etc. at that time was amazing he says.
