The Gracie Debate: "Online" vs. "Live" Training

Effective June 1, 2014, students who earn complete the Gracie Combatives program from home, and pass the Blue Belt Test via the Video Evaluation Process, will earn a Gracie University "Technical Blue Belt." To earn the Official Gracie Academy Blue Belt, students must pass an extended hands-on evaluation with Ryron, Rener, or an authorized Gracie Academy representative at a Certified Training Center.
As always, promotion to purple belt and brown belt require an in person evaluation with an authorized Gracie Academy representative, and black belt promotion requires successful completion of a one-week live evaluation at Gracie Academy headquarters in Torrance, California.

Many people criticize the Gracie University learning model because it is online. What do you have to say to those who criticize your teaching method?
First, those who criticize it are doing so because they do not know how effective it is. It’s easy to criticize something you don’t understand. Second, our students study their lessons online. Some people think that you simply watch some videos and you get a belt promotion. But that is incorrect. You watch the videos to learn the techniques, then you go to the garage and practice for countless hours, and if you do this for a few years, it’s possible for you to take a test and earn a belt promotion. The same way you can learn a technique by watching an instructor demonstrate it live, you can learn a technique by watching videos online, and online you can rewind as many times as you want if you don’t fully understand a technique. Some people don’t understand that online learning is even more effective than learning in a traditional setting. In a live class, there are students of all belt levels, and the instructor teaches the same techniques to everyone. Online, each person has their specific class. Some people have tried learning in the classroom, but the lessons were random so they had difficulty learning. So what did they do? Resorted to Gracie University.

Q: Your philosophies regarding the art seem to be very polarising within the greater jiu-jitsu community. Why do you think this is the case?
A: My dad always told me “If you do something great, half the people will love you and half will hate you”. When we created GracieUniversity.com, we received a fair amount of negative backlash from existing jiu-jitsu instructors, including some within our family, largely because the curriculum is so complete and they felt threatened that they would lose students. But what they didn’t realise is that GracieUniversity.com is helping them far more than it is harming them.
When someone watches the UFC and becomes intrigued by jiu-jitsu, nine times out of 10 they won’t sign up at a jiu-jitsu school because they are too intimidated. But, through Gracie University, we are able to give the student an amazing introduction to jiu-jitsu in their home, for free! Most people don’t have the discipline or necessary training partner to learn from home, so once they watch the first few lessons of the Gracie Combatives curriculum, they will almost certainly go to their local BJJ school and sign up for classes, even if that school is not a certified training centre. I’m pretty sure Ryron and I are responsible for creating more beginner jiu-jitsu students than any other instructors in the world, and I’m proud of that.

Ich finde die "Spitzfindigkeit" gut, auch da der Terminus "technical" eine gute Beschreibung ist. Letztlich sollte / ist allen klar, dass dieser Kurs langfristig für den Schüler auf die Matte führt.
Ein weiterer Punkt ist, dass es mittlerweile viele Videos, Bücher und Clips gibt, die alle relativ unstrukturiert sind und Gracie U ist da ein homogenes, zusammenhängendes System. Auch wenn alle Trainer ständig betonen, man solle nicht von Youtube-Clips lernen, kann man die Realität nicht ignorieren und GU bindet dass alles etwas und formt eine Struktur. Allein aus dem Grund hat da mMn bisher etwas gefehlt und ist da anderen Kampfsportarten weit voraus.
Aber "for free" ist das ganze ja nicht...
Gut, das Ganze läuft ja noch nicht so lange. Aber hat denn schon überhaupt mal jemals einer von den "Garagenlernern" so ne Prüfung bestanden?
Techniken mag sich jemand, der motorisch begabt ist, ja von nem gut gemachten Video abschauen und mit nem gleichgesinnten Anfänger üben können. Aber der wird doch niemals mit Leuten, die Woche für Woche mit Leuten auf allen Könnensstufen kämpfen, auf Augenhöhe mitkämpfen können? Und wenn die alle nur durchfallen, werden die sich doch auch veräppelt fühlen. Werden dann nicht doch schleichend die Standards gesenkt (und somit irgendwann die bloß "technical" instructors Schulen eröffnen)?

OK, das ist natürlich der Idealfall. Da gings allerdings auch "nur" um den Blaugurt. Wenn ichs richtig verstehe, kann man ja theoretisch bis Schwarz nur zu den Prüfungen in nem Dojo aufschlagen? Kann das klappen?
Kann in sofern nicht klappen dass höhere BJJ Gürtel stark an die tatsächliche Leistung beim Rollen angepasst sein sollten und nicht an das was man in einer "Prüfung" vorturnt.
Das Ganze mit Gürtel ist einfach schrott und sie brauchen sich über die Entrüstung nicht wundern die beiden machen sich mMn zu ner Peinlichkeit für BJJ und ihre Familie.
Macht euer Online-Training, schön und gut, aber nicht mehr.
Hast du irgendwo herausgelesen wie diese "in person evaluation" (die die Voraussetzung für die "echten" Graduierungen sind) stattfindet? Kann mir gut vorstellen, dass das eben nicht nur vorturnen sondern auch rollen ist.

Dein normaler Trainier sieht dich ca 2+ Jahre lang bis er dich graduiert mehrmals pro Woche rollen

Da wurde anscheinend nach Abschneiden im Turnier graduiert(oder halt eben nicht). Ist finde ich auch nicht sehr zielführend, dürfte anscheinend aber normal(er) sein im BJJ.
Ich sehe das so: Solange die Leute die zu Hause lernen sich einige Trainingspartner suchen und mit denen dann regelmäßig rollen und bei den Live Evaluations dann auch vor/mit dem Lehrer einige Runden rollen müssen kann das System durchaus funktionieren und die Qualität bleibt gewährleistet. Zumindest beim Blaugurt sehe ich da kein Problem. Bei den höheren Graduierungen wäre eine längere Evaluation sich besser aber so wie ich das sehe ist ihr System ja nicht in Stein gemeißelt. Da kann sich noch vieles ändern.
