Masters Fight Night, March 26th 2005
Rhein Ruhr Halle, Duisburg, Germany
Report and photos by Keith Mills
Duisburg, Germany -- The German scene took a huge step forward onto the international stage with MFN's first of three Grand Prix-style shows set for this year. So far most of the attention in the European Union from an international point of view has been in Holland, Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, and Russia. Switzerland should be noted as making a recent impact to a lesser degree starting last year but looks to be making up for a later start. Other countries like Croatia, Poland, and Spain have had smaller amateur-level or regional shows but Germany is the most recent to hold a show that can truly be considered of international importance.
Fighters from Denmark, Poland, and France came to Duisburg to compete in the three-show eight-man tournament. The idea is the best fighters from this night face off in October with the best two fighting in December for a prize of 150,000 euros (roughly $195,000). More fighters were originally scheduled to fight, including two up-and-comers from Team Cro-Cop in Croatia, but Cro-Cop and his team cancelled after both fighters reportedly sustained injuries in last month's Nokaut show. Overall, the foreigners went 4-2 with two to the four Poles sustaining losses.
Danish fighters Lars Besand and Stefan Holtmann showed ground and pound is alive and well in Europe while most of the other fighters excelled at powerful kicking from their muaythai or K-1 style backgrounds. Highlight of the night by all accounts was Denis Siver from Mannheim. Denis not only had the powerful kicks but was well-rounded, taking his Polish opponent Maciek Lascak to the ground after softening him up. Nordin Asrih was the fan favorite, even having a couple local rappers enter the ring with him to get the crowd pumped up. The cross-over with musicians didn't end there, with rock band Crow 7 debuting a new song "Free Fight," specifically about MMA. Although it is too early to tell how these fighters would do at a higher level, by the end of the series, some of these names will likely be "the next big name" out of Europe.
