Every instructor has their own criteria (or lack of criteria) for belt
promotion. There is no universal standard in BJJ nor do I think there
will there ever be.
My standard for promotion only applies to my students. It has no
relevance when it comes to other instructors. Similarly, the criteria
and standard of other instructors has no relevance to my students.
Keep in mind that there is also a very big difference between a brand
new purple belt and a very seasoned purple belt. So "purple belt
level" is very vague.

With that being said, for my students, "beating" or tapping someone is
not a criteria for me when it comes to promotion and determining
skill. There are too many people who win simply based on their
strength, speed, power, explosiveness, endurance, aggressiveness, or
previous grappling experience. So for me, it not about how many taps,
but rather how specific things were accomplished during grappling.

Interessanter Standpunkt. Wie steht es bei euch (in der Schule) mit der Verleihung von Gürteln für's Grappling? Eher "kampfbetont" oder "technischer Aspekt"? Welche Mischung haltet ihr für die beste?
