That is to say ... the densho existed when there was far more in Kitô-ryû than just the Kumi'uchi no kata.
But obviously the principles of the ryû are the principles of the kata.
What I am trying to say, is that the densho do not explain anything in the sense that people understand when they think of explanations of kata.
People today in an explanation of kata expect mechanistics, in the sense of ... "tori makes one step with his right foot to the left, 30cm far in an angle of 30°, then uke grabs tori's right wrist with the left hand, and blah, blah, blah".
There is nothing like that in the densho, that is the 5 fundamental scrolls.
However, there are obviously other densho in Kito-ryu besides this.
Everything that was ever written in the past within a branch of the ryû and that explained things is a densho.
Some of these densho do provide mechanistic descriptions to assist people.
But again, mechanistics are often not in the sort of detail the Westerner expects, because the Westerner's view on kata is so different from the Japanese thinking that mechanistics is all what it is about thus supposedly a hyper-detailed mechanistic version is necessary to they can copy these mechanistics.
What is in the fundamental densho of Kitô-ryû is crucial, but also very difficult to understand, not just intellectually, but in a way that one can bring this into practice and masters this.
Even if translated into one's native language, this is not something one 'gets' after reading it twice.
It is more a quest to struggle with for years to come.
From what you write, my understanding is that you have already yourself come to this conclusion.
