Many people consider him a Saint Petersburg native. However, the 4 time MMA champion Fyodor Emelianenko was born in Staryi Oskol in the Belgorod region. And , recently, he is often abroad. But he is connected to the Northern Capital (Saint Petersburg) by his memories about the meeting with the president of the country. It is not often, and not every champion gets to have a dinner with the President, especially a champion in such not very widely known sport as MMA!

“It was very pleasant, frankly, to get an invitation for an informal meeting”, said Fyodor. “I did not expect that. Normally, people in the position of power don’t pay lots of attention to us, and now surprisingly, the President himself invited for a meeting”

Q: What food was at the table, if this is not a big secret?
A: Tea, and everything that comes with it. Bread, muffins, sweets. But we did not eat a lot, we mostly talked. The president was interested in my training regimen, my future plans.

Q: Did you get to ask him questions?
A: I was answering questions for the most part, and he was listening. I kind of understood that asking the President a lot of questions is not appropriate.

Q: Did you have any desire to wrestle with him, by any chance? You should have challenged him for a match! As far as I know you began you sport career in judo, which is the favorite sport of the President.
A: Yes, when I was 11, I started training in judo. Currently I am International Master of the Sport in judo. I saw videos of Putin’s matches. He is a very good judoka with a lot of potential. However, I did not have any desire to wrestle with him. We are in different weight classes, you know. He would not stand a chance against me.

Q: Your youngest brother Aleksandr fights in Mix-Fight (M-1) too, but in a different weight class… (yes, yes, I know, the interviewer does not follow the sport, blah, blah)
A: Sasha (short for Aleksandr) is the middle brother. He is 5 years younger than me. Our youngest brother, Ivan, is 18 years old .

Q: Does he a wrestle as well?
A: Of course. I got both my brothers into sambo, and helped them along the way in their training. And our father got me into sambo. He was into boxing when he was young, so he knows a thing or two about combat sports. Our dad follows our progress and supports us. Our mother only recently decided to watch some of our fights. She is very worried, says “this is very dangerous, please be careful”.

Q: So, about Aleksander… Unlike you he has long hair and lots of tattoos. That’s probably his image. However this dangerous look did not help him reach great heights in the ring. What do you think is the cause for this?
A: My brother lacks dedication and discipline. I spoke to him about that many times, and about his tattoos as well. This prison tradition of covering your body with tattoos has nothing to do with the sport. Sasha knows about his problems, and I’ll let him sort them out himself. I don’t want to impose myself on anybody.

Q: It looks like you are not on good terms with him
A: We have a normal relationship. It is just that every person chooses their own way in life.

Q: Well, maybe MMA does not suit him well?
A: Why is that? He is in top 10 best fighters in the world. This is a very high achievement. Ivan also wants to go to MMA. He wants to fight in the best MMA organization in the world – PRIDE (looks like Fyodor, unlike Sherdoggers does not care about PRIDE vs UFC rivalry after UFC bought Pride. Seems like it is the same thing for him.) But it is too early for him to fight there. He needs more experience and strength.

Q: Where do you see beauty in this strange sport: two huge dudes are beating each other up all over their bodies?
A: First of all, we are not beating each other up; we are fighting according to the rules. “Fight without rules” is just a misnomer when applied to MMA. In reality, it is regulated where you can hit and where you cannot, you cannot bite, pinch, etc.

Q: So you never pinched your opponent when nobody was looking?
A: I don’t need this stuff. I am confident I can win fights within the rules. I studied various martial arts for many years: judo, sambo, boxing, thai-boxng, kick-boxing… It is a big pleasure for me to get into the ring. We have a very simple philosophy: we want to outthink our opponent. To do that, it is necessary to develop intellectually. Wrestling enhances not only the body but the spirit as well. And what’s important is that there are no age limitations. You can practice it until you are 100 years old if your health allows it.

Q: Many people consider Mix Fight just a show.
A: For the viewers – this is a show. In order to please the viewers organizers invite rock groups, decorate the fighters, etc. As soon as they feel that the audience is ready, they bring out the competitors. But for us, the fighters, this is a real, serious sport.

Q: You are very popular in South Korea. In May, you were greeted in Seoul like a national hero! An now they developed a video game, where you are the main character that defeats everybody he fights in the game.
A: Two years ago Koreans offered me a contract to develop this game. It took a year to develop it. It is available for cell phones there now. I tried it a couple of times, but did not get into it for some reason. It is a good gift for a friend ;)

Q: What do you do in your free time. How do you relax?
A: I like reading, swimming in a sea. Recently I came back from Zheleznovodsk, where I was having a vacation and recovering from an injury at the same time.

Q: Do you know what you are going to do when your career as a fighter is over?
A: Well, I would like to fight a couple more years. I still have the desire. Then, I will probably become a coach, will share my experience and skills with younger fighters.

Q: You have a daughter. Will you also get her into MMA, as you did with your brothers?
A: God forbid! I really don’t like it when women participate in MMA, boxing or powerlifting. It is not becoming for our beautiful halves to do that. My daughter does ballroom dancing and is enrolled in an art school. I am really happy with it, and wish it for all the other girls

Die Passage über einen Kampf mit Putin ist witzig. Verdient hätte er es (Putin). Noch schöner wäre Randy VS. G.W. Bush... ;)
