"After finishing Satria Fighting Arts I had the challenge of racking my brain finding a name suitable to what I do or a name that describes it. I have studied Pencak Silat since I was 15 years old and throughout those years the art has undergone many changes whether be the syllabus or the name. The way the history was taught to me was that the early practitioners of Pencak Silat had a number of key movements and principles that they followed and when the next generation learnt the system and moved on, depending on the geographic of where they resided or what the influence of that town or village is the art evolved accordingly so did the name. Some called it after their own village, an animal or even their own family name.
    ...
This is one of the reasons why I have decided to walk my own separate journey in Pencak Silat as I believe that there is only so much you can learn and journey with a teacher or a Guru until you have to make the art your own hence I was saying the art I was learning had undergone many changes and that last stages of the art kept being expanded which very much confused me and at times challenged me. I know I will never ever finish learning until there is breath in me but I do believe you can finish with a teacher or else you fall danger on relying too much from the teacher to unpack everything for you which I believe is unhealthy and to make an art work for you, you need to decipher the principles accordingly to fit your body shape,
    ...
so with the principles taught to me I have developed, evolved and changed not saying it’s any higher or lower way of defending oneself and like the practitioners of old I have given a different name to mark my own expression of the art I fell in love with 15 years ago.
I have gone back to the name “Silat” as I want to pay homage to Indonesia and that the style and influence of the art I am teaching has come from this country. The words “Buka” (which translate Open) and “Lingkaran” (Translated as Circle) describes the fluidity, velocity and connection of the movements, covering all ranges and heights. Also how open and aware you are to your surroundings (It means much more than this but will explain in greater detail on the website).
So as it stands the syllabus of Silat Buka Lingakaran is as follows :
    1st Phase – Ground Fighting
    2nd Phase – Upright Fighting
    3rd Phase – Grappling
    4th Phase – Multiple attackers
5th Phase – Kembangan (Flower Dance)
    6th Phase – Advance Weapons
7th Phase – Manoeuvring and Defending with the Full Uniform"

"the art that Steven has taught has changed 5 this included the name..... there was a point he wanted to drop the name silat which he did when he called it "Satria Fighting Arts"
