"Saotome, Aikido and the Harmony of Nature, ch. The Training Process"
Many years ago I was teaching a class at Hombu Dojo, the technique for practice was kokyu ho. Absorbed in explaining the refinements of the technique to some of the yudansha (those of black belt rank), I was unaware that in one corner of the mat, two beginners with shoulder hunched, muscles tensed, and arms rigid were locked in competitive struggle. It looked more like sumo wrestling than Aikido training. I was also unaware that O'Sensei had come to the dojo to look in the class, as was often his habit, until I heard his voice. "Who's teaching this class!" he thundered, his voice sharp with anger. Then O'Sensei saw me and, pointing to the astonished beginners, said, "Saotome, you destroy Aikido principle. I'm developing a system, a training system, an education system. Aikido training is process. You are crushing Aikido meaning!"
